The following phenomena were noted: - Increased light intensity does not increase the reaction. - The reaction is inhibited in the presence of water. - Sterilizing the sample at 175℃ does not completely stop the reaction. Several hypotheses were formulated to explain these findings. - The organic molecules may have been formed non biologically. The Martian soil may contain catalysts capable of synthesizing organic compounds from carbon monoxide, even in darkness. This would imply that the soil chemistry has the strange capacity to out certain organic operations. The labeled released - No organic matter may have been actually produced experiments during the experiment. This opinion is shared by some scientists. - The filter used to detect the organic molecules may have malfunctioned after its year-long journey through space.
